Carve Time for What Makes Your Heart Sing

Have you ever wondered why, in the event of an emergency on an airplane, the first thing you’re instructed to do is put the oxygen mask on yourself? The answer is easy: if you don’t take care of yourself first, you may not be able to take care of those around you.

It doesn’t seem selfish when you fly, does it? Yet when it comes to helping your spirit soar, taking care of ourselves always seems to be last on our list. That’s why I want you to write down a list of things that make you happy, then prioritize your day to make sure at least one of those things make their way into it. Make sure you’re doing something each day that’s guaranteed to make you smile.

Preferably, you should pencil them in for the morning so that whatever you choose isn’t left for the end of the day when you may not have time to do them. If you can’t do mornings, then schedule them like you would schedule anything in your life that is important to do. So if what you really need to make you happy is to be outside for a while, then schedule that time outdoors for a particular time of the day as if your job depended on it.

However, don’t think of it as being selfish. After all, the same rules that you have no problem with up in the air apply down here on the ground as well. If you can’t do something for your spirit, you’re not going to be able to raise others’ spirits.
